Velvet Sky, located in the quaint neighborhood of Jenkintown, is a modern style of scratch bakery where quality trumps quantity and where our products have a shelf life of hours, not days. We are a specialty bakery that focuses on cupcakes and custom cakes. You won't find any muffins here, just forty different varieties of cupcakes and custom made cakes from the simplest of buttercream birthday cakes to the most ornate wedding cakes and everything in between.
Throw out everything antiquated about what you think passes for baked goods, and discover why Velvet Sky is the freshest bakery in the area. Loads of shortening and big cans of pie filling be gone! Here we use butter (literally, tons of it), sugar, eggs, fresh fruit, and all of the finest baking ingredients on the market. Our chocolates are from Belgium and the Netherlands, not the middle of Pennsylvania. Our products are always baked fresh daily, never pulled from a freezer.

Operation: Architecture August 2010
What do you get for the guy who maybe has everything? Why a replica of his house or a replica of his favorite baseball team's new one billion dollar stadium. We spent the better part of the week working on two very architecturally challenging cakes. The first is an exact replica of a house built by the owner of the past five years, the second is a groom's cake for some team in New York.Operation: Mini Cake July 2010
A test of will, perhaps. Combining every skill necessary to produce a product, most definitely. There are times when we need to bring out our full toolbelt of tricks to produce high quality and artful products. In the beginning of July, we assembled eighty two tiered mini cakes, two tiers each to be given as favors, along with a matching wedding cake. In case you were wondering, here's the process your cakes go through from beginning to end.
We started with a tasting appointment where we took the bride's design into account. Based on color samples and input, we generated a contract and sketch. Half of the cakes were pink, the other turquoise. The mini cakes were fresh baked apple with caramel buttercream, the two tier multiple flavors. We spent time going back and forth with the bride in terms of flavors, design, and containers that were suitable for the cakes. We made sure to find the largest containers possible so we could give them a decent sized cake.
All of the cakes were baked fresh. An assistant spent the better part of the day assembling and icing each individual tier (thats almost three hundred individual layers in case you were counting). Each tier was fondanted individually and then assembled. Because we were in ninety plus degree weather everything needed to be finished as close to delivery on Sunday Afternoon as humanly possible
We worked well into the night and all day Sunday to ensure the product was not only as fresh as possible, but remained stable. Each of the four varieties of flowers were hand airbrushed with exact colors to match the scheme. The favors were then banded with opposite color transitions. The last step was packaging, being careful not to damage the product or dirty the containers.
The final final finished product is below. It was transported about an hour and set up in ninety plus degree heat. The service included over fifty pounds of fondant, one hundred and fifty hand made flowers, and dozens of hours of labor.
